Who Won Dancing With The Stars?
Jennifer Grey DWTS Winner 2010 Season 11 – Nobody knew who Bristol Palin was until September 1st, 2008, when she made an appearance at the Republican convention and was introduced as the 17 year old daughter of vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin.

Fast forward few years later, Miss Palin is now the single mother of young Tripp and was almost crowned the winner of the eleventh season of Dancing with the Stars thanks to the Tea Party.

We say almost because Paling finished third in the dancing show with partner Mark Ballas, while Disney star Kyle Massey and Lacey Schwimmer came in second.

Which means that Jennifer Grey and Derek Hough claimed the crown of Dancing with the Stars 2010 thanks to their perfect scores and unforgettable routines week after week.

The Old Story

All now have a chance to win and take home the disco ball trophy. The scores for the finals were high across the board, but Jennifer now leads as she had six perfect tens across the judges' scorecards and scored a 60/60.

In second place is Kyle with a 56/60 for Team Massey and a third place score of 52 of 60 is in the books for Team Palin. The controversy has been building with each week that Palin advances and really boiled over with last week's elimination.

Singer Brandy Norwood just missed the finals and last week said she felt 'numb' after her elimination from Dancing With The Stars. Some viewers were outraged, but at the time her dance partner Maksim Chmerkovskiy noted that viewers' votes are really important.

The votes will determine the winner.

Will there be enough votes for a win for Jennifer or Kyle or Bristol?

Actress Jennifer and professional dancing partner Derek Hough earned a perfect score for their two dances on Monday's show and they are now in the lead on the judges scorecards, but the voters voices count as this is reality TV.

If the vast majority of comments from Irish supporters in our inbox can be taken as an accurate gauge of how this weekend’s showdown at Lansdowne Road will pan out, then Ireland don’t have a chance.
It’s tough to blame the home faithful for losing their faith given Ireland’s record this year. Declan Kidney’s team have lost seven out of eleven matches and looked unconvincing in last Saturday’s 20-10 win against Samoa.
Perhaps the criticism is a little harsh? Sure, Ireland were dominated up front by South Africa but they only lost by two points in the end. Samoa gave them a real scare but that was arguably the best team in blue ever to visit Europe.
Test rugby is a game of small margins – if you’re just a little off song, the punishment is usually severe. If we take the comments coming out of the Irish camp at face value, then the hosts are confident that they can fix a few areas and give the All Blacks a run for their money.
But if ever there was a unit that punishes their opposition for the small errors mentioned above, it’s the current crop of men in black.
What stood out in the All Blacks’ win against Scotland was the ruthless manner in which the tourists went about their business. Even when they were over 30 points ahead, when most teams would have switched to cruise control, they continued to hammer away.
Ireland need to shape up – and fast – or they risk suffering the same fate as their Northern Hemisphere counterparts at Murrayfield. For all their insistence that confidence hasn’t taken a slump and that the atmosphere in the camp is positive, they surely cannot be immune to the criticism from outside. Just how the hosts react if New Zealand take an early lead will be interesting to see.
Albert Einstein’s definition of insanity is “doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.” What seems to irritate Irish fans the most is Kidney’s insistence in picking a virtually unchanged team (compared to the side that faced South Africa), despite their lack or results.

Former New Zealand scrum-half Justin Marshall told an Irish newspaper this week that he reckons there isn’t a single player in the Irish team that would be selected for the All Blacks on current form. Marshall obviously could never be the most objective pundit, but he probably isn’t far off the mark.
But would wholesale changes to the hosts’ team turn the bus around? We’re not sure. Good players don’t turn bad over night. That said, there’s one or two names in that pack that might be past their sell-by date.
In stark contrast, all the news this week regarding the All Blacks has been about records. Mils Muliaina and Richie McCaw will become New Zealand’s most capped players on Saturday. If all goes to plan Graham Henry will be rewarded with his 100th Test win as a coach and Dan Carter could become the most prolific points scorer from any nation in Test history.
The Kiwis must be ruing last month’s defeat in Hong Kong more than ever as the world record for most consecutive wins would surely have been within their grasps by now.
Of course, Henry has troubles of his own. He has to leave one of Conrad Smith, Ma’a Nonu and Sonny Bill Williams out of his team every week. Poor guy.
Ones to watch:
For Ireland: Just when we all thought it was time to put Ronan O’Gara out to pasture, he almost pulls the game out of the fire against South Africa and then scores the winning try against Samoa. Jonathan Sexton has to live up to the faith put in him this week. Amid growing calls from some parts of the Irish public to see Sean O’Brien given a spot in the team, David Wallace is also under pressure to come up with a big game.
For New Zealand: The hottest topic of debate in New Zealand right now is ‘who should start in midfield?’. Sonny Bill Williams’ performance last week set the bar pretty high, so expect a reaction from Conrad Smith and Ma’a Nonu. The opposition his week is high class so a strong game from the Hurricanes’ duo will go a long way to helping them retain their status as the incumbents .
Head-to-head: Ireland have disappointed at scrum time this month and the All Blacks won’t be too proud of their set-piece performance at Twickenham either. It all starts up front – if the Irish backs don’t get the ball on the front foot, their cause is lost.

The Dutch are Unclutch, or so the stereotype goes. Every time they get a great team together, they promptly fall apart and throw away the tournament.
World Cups. European Championships. The years and venues and players change, the story stays the same. No world power is more disappointing.

“When we win, we tend to be a bit arrogant,” said coach Bert van Marwijk on Monday, on the eve of a World Cup semifinal here against Uruguay.
Now, this is some humorous stuff.
The Dutch are arrogant? The Dutch suffer from overconfidence?
This is a nation best known for windmills, tulips and wooden clogs. It boasts a fan base that wears bright orange – and gets the joke. They are suckers for brass bands. They go nuts for trendy sports such as long track speedskating. They put mayonnaise on French fries. The nation’s biggest city, Amsterdam, is famed for its legalized marijuana and front-window red light district. People still commute by canal boat. Or bicycle.
You want to know about the Netherlands? Well, you can walk into a movie theater in Amsterdam and buy a beer. And I don’t mean just like in no paper cup, I’m talking about a glass of beer.
If ever there was a country that didn’t take itself too seriously – one that would presumably lack self-confidence – it’s the Netherlands. The warm, friendly, welcoming and decidedly unpretentious Netherlands. Everyone loves the Dutch. These are some of the nicest people on earth.
Yet, there they are. They win a few soccer games and for some reason they completely lose their mind. And after besting mighty Brazil – with a come-from-behind 2-1 victory, no less – the possibility for arrogance is obvious.
The only thing standing in the way of the Netherlands’ first finals appearance since 1978 is Uruguay, a small South American nation whose coach spent most of Monday’s press conference complaining about his invasive local media … which is considerably smaller than the horde that covers, say, the New York Yankees. He called them “war correspondents.”
Uruguay is a big underdog, with a number of missing stars (handballer Luis Suarez included) only further stacking the odds against them.
“In some countries they have more footballers than the 3 million people inhabiting Uruguay,” noted coach Oscar Tabarez.
He followed that up with this bold bit of trash talk:
“I think it’s fair to say we have a fairly modest hope we can have the effort to win.”
So look out. The Dutch have a history of overconfidence, and Uruguay would instill overconfidence in any semifinal opponent (heavyweights Spain and Germany play Wednesday).
So now everyone is nervous. Which means, for perhaps the first time ever, it’s worth reminding the good people of Amsterdam that they should just chill out. Maybe they can keep the “coffee” shops open late to help preserve civil order.
“I’ve said many times, I can’t change a culture, but I’ve worked very hard to make this group of players realize if you want to win something in a tournament, you must always focus on the next game,” van Marwijk said. “You are talking about the past that we never really made it, that we failed.”
Well, the Dutch did win the 1988 European Championship, the only major title the nation has won. Other than that it’s been a string of disappointments. Two World Cup finals losses in 1974 and 1978 were tough. Not getting back since has been tougher.

At Euro 2008, the Dutch destroyed World Cup finalists France and Italy in group play and appeared unstoppable. They were an overwhelming favorite in the quarterfinals, only to lose to lightly regarded Russia.
It was a stunning result. And the heart of that team is the heart of this team.
“As we said, it’s a long process,” van Marwijk said of building the mentality to close a team out.
How the heck the Dutch got so arrogant is a mystery. It’s undeniably their curse, though. Scan their history and current roster and you can actually see it. From Ruud van Nistelrooy to Rafael van der Vaart. Those are some regal – read: arrogant – names there.
And what’s with a country that calls itself the Netherlands and Holland? Yet its people are Dutch. That’s the equivalent of referring to yourself in the third person.
So history looms over Cape Town like the Chicago Cubs in the World Series. The joke is that the only team capable of beating the Netherlands is Holland, and Holland is favored.
For his part, van Marwijk kept trying to lower expectations and grew agitated when reporters asked about the finals, not the semifinals.

Current Dutch teammates Khalid Boulahrouz and Joris Mathijsen following their upset loss to Russia in the Euro 2008 quarterfinals.

“I really don’t want to talk about the final. I’ve been hearing this much too often. First we have to play a semifinal. I didn’t come to this tournament to wring my hands once we achieved that. Achieving the final is not enough. You want to win the final. But I am not even thinking of that.”
Actually, he is. Everyone in orange is. They can’t help themselves. They are the Dutch. They are the Terrell Owens of the World Cup.

England vs Algeria Match Preview

Both teams will see this match as a must win when Algeria square up against England in a Group C encounter in Cape Town on Friday.

Algeria have never made it past the group stage in their two previous World Cup appearances in 1982 and 1986, although they did cause quite a stir when they upset the West Germans in 1982.
That particular result led to controversy as the West Germans and Austrians later contrived a 1-0 West German victory that served to pass both of those European countries through to the knockout phase at the expense of the Algerians.
But that’s their history and this is 2010.
Algeria lost 1-0 to Slovenia in their first match in this World Cup and sit last in Group C. Now they need a win over England to guarantee a chance of survival.
After seeing how the Three Lions squad failed to dispatch the USA, Algerian defender Nadir Belhadj for one thinks his team can do it.

Algerians see problems in England’s defense

"We have seen some gaps, especially in their defense,” said Belhadj, “and, if we can take advantage of those gaps…maybe it could make the difference and we could create history by qualifying from the group stages.”
The English are not immune to being upset by a lesser football power. Their 1-0 loss to USA in Brazil in the 1950 World Cup is the most commonly cited example. Last weekend’s 1-1 draw with the USA only serves to show that the modern England squad is vulnerable too.
Robert Green’s unfortunate blunder gifted the USA a goal and a share of the points, but despite largely dominating play against the Americans the English seldom looked truly dominant.
With the loss of Rio Ferdinand and with Ledley King doubtful, Belhadj’s observation isn’t far off the mark. The English do indeed seem vulnerable at the back.
Ferdinand’s knee injury, suffered in a training ground encounter, ruled him out of the tournament before it started, and motivated England boss Fabio Capello to call up Michael Dawson of Tottenham to replace the Manchester United man.
Talented but fragile defender Ledley King suffered a groin strain in the match against the USA and is said to be doubtful for the Algeria match. If King is unable to start Capello will have to make a decision on whom to play at the back. Dawson joins two other players in the frame for central defense: Liverpool’s Jamie Carragher and West Ham’s Matthew Upson.
The English at least can be comforted knowing that Gareth Barry is once again fit and is set to start against Algeria, having recovered from an ankle injury suffered while playing for his club, Manchester City, last month.
But the starting goalkeeper is another area of decision for Capello. Will he go with Green again, despite his calamitous error against the USA?

Is the Jabulani a factor?

For his part, Green admitted the mistake was all his and nothing to do with the apparently unpredictable qualities of the much maligned Jabulani ball.
"You prepare mentally for making those mistakes - that's what you do the preparation for before a game. You don't let it affect you. I'm not blaming the ball, I should have stopped it and there's no two ways about it” said the West Ham ‘keeper.
Capello put things in perspective. “He made one mistake, a big mistake, but in the second half he also made one great save,” the manager said. “He saved that really, really well.” We’ll probably not know until Friday whether Green will get another chance.
Yet the Algerians come into the match with England having suffered a similar fate. The goal that gave their Slovenian opponents the vital three points last weekend also came as a result of a goalkeeping error.
Algerian keeper Chaouchi should have dealt with Koran’s shot easily. Instead he allowed the shot to bounce off his arm and into the goal. The Jabulani factor?

Both teams need a win

A loss to England means an early trip home for the Algerians. A win, albeit unlikely, is probably the only chance they have of survival, and Belhadj and company will undoubtedly approach the match with the attitude that nothing is impossible.
England’s defensive worries are certainly troublesome, but they’d be offset some if striker Wayne Rooney were to get himself on the score sheet. Rooney hasn’t scored for his country in six matches, and although others among the English are capable of bulging the onion bag, the sight of Rooney doing for England what he did so well for Manchester United this season would undoubtedly warm the cockles of English hearts as they prepare to face the big boys in the knockout stages. But first they have to avoid being upset by Algeria.

What's at stake

Argentina defeated Nigeria 1-0 in its opening game, while South Korea posted a 2-0 victory over Greece. As a result, the Argentines and South Koreans are tied for first place in Group B with three points apiece, while winless Nigeria and Greece pick up the rear.
This is a critical game for both sides as a win would land that team in first place in Group B and put them in the driver's seat with six points and one game to go in the first round.
A tie wouldn't be disastrous for Argentina, as its last match of the group stage is against lowly Greece, who has yet to win a game in two World Cups after making their tournament debut in 1994.
South Korea, on the other hand, faces a tricky Nigeria side in its final encounter of the group stage, so anything less than a victory against Argentina would mean their chances of advancing to the second round would go down to the wire.

Suspension watch

Jonas Gutierrez earned a yellow card in Argentina's previous match. If he receives a another against South Korea, he will be suspended for Argentina's final game of the group stage. South Korea doesn`t have any players on a yellow card.

Player to watch for Argentina

Gabriel Heinze — The tough-tackling defender netted the winner for Argentina against Nigeria, scoring with a powerful header off a free kick. Heinze is coach Diego Maradona's defensive marshal, but it will be interesting to see if he ventures forward in attack after finding the net against the Nigerians.

Player to watch for South Korea

Lee Jung-Soo — Like Heinze, Lee Jung-Soo is a centre-back who scored for South Korea off a set piece against Greece. The South Korean possesses good speed, which he uses to great effect in joining the attack, and to recover to get back into position when the other team has the ball.

Key match-up

Lionel Messi vs. Park Ji-Sung — They play for two of the biggest clubs in the world (Messi for FC Barcelona, Park Ji-Sung with Manchester United), and both are talented playmakers and serve as the creative fulcrums of their national teams. Messi is the best player in the world, but Park Ji-Sung is a talented star who doesn't quite receive the recognition he deserves. A strong performance against Argentina would go a long way to change that.

Group A's second match will face the host against the Celestes. With two draws nothing is yet decided in this group, and the winner will claim the top at least for a week.

Diego Forlan's squad had a very disappointing beginning in the competition, as their supposedly unstoppable offense had many problems making its way against France's packed back line. South Africa confirmed their strategy 4-2-3-1 can offer deadly counterattacks and for that reason most of the second half they dominated the game against Mexico. Their lack of experience against strikers of International football proved lethal against the Mexicans: something will have to change as Luis Suarez and Diego Forlan can prove deadly if given any space. Half a ticket for the Knockouts will be given to the winner, will the host stop Charrua's advance?

Oscar Tabarez's experimental lab

Something went wrong in Uruguay's Gallic debut, as the bridge between Celeste's strikers and the creative line was built over impassable terrain. For this matter the Maestro will introduce many variations, as well as adding a third striker to better assist team's marksman. Nicolas Lodeiro's unacceptable behavior against France will keep him away from this match and probably for the rest of the competition, for now the substitutes will be given a chance to show what they can do to aid Uruguay's creation.

Uruguay's new hope, Edilson CavaniPalermo's Edinson Cavani will take Ignacio Gonzales' place in an offensive manner. The lack of a fourth midfielder will call for Diego Forlan to take command over team's offensive direction, as his teams needs his wits to start their advance, and the offensive trident will feed endlessly from this modification. Porto's Jorge Fucile will be the second change in the squad, occupying the left band, sidelining Mauricio Victorino to the bench. Forlan recognized their mistakes against France "We need to improve our collective game from what we did against France and have more weight on our opponent's area". Unluckily, and opposing to Socrates beliefs, lack of ignorance does not imply goodness. Their rivals are up to date with this modifications and will probably try to overwhelm the Celestes from the bands, to produce the same effect the Vuvuzuela have over the crowds: to confuse and try to lower the level of awareness of the opponents.

Both Pereyra's showed their solidity from the bands, but the Africans have a wide physical advantage on both speed and stamina over the American squad. Diego Lugano will have to be omnipresent to stop Bafana Bafana's endless advance, but this is not something he is not used to: team's captain recognizes he must be a defensive warlord, and this does not appear to be a burden too heavy for him to have over his shoulder. The four man back-line will be mandatory against a team that relies heavily in the counter attack, though it might leave many spaces in the midfield, especially with Nicolas Lodeiro's absence.

As the Maestro declared, a victory will be a "Giant leap forward" for the Celeste. But will they be able to outrun The Boys at their own home?
An ambush in Africa

The local team is locked with all their rivals of Group A with a single point, and now the end of the Group Stage is almost here the pressure for victory is growing higher and higher. Team's aggressive formation with a lot of pressure from the bands can get through almost any defense. Katlego Mphela and Siphiwe Tshabalala showed both of them can surprise from distance as well as advance until facing opponent's goalkeeper face to face, though their last second calls have not been particularly sharp, at least during the first encounter.

South Africa's gunner Tshepo MassilelaBrazilian's coach Carlos Alberto Parrreira will have much to think figuring out how to face the Celeste squad. Against Mexico his defensive strategy worked wonders, though he might lack the solidity of certain players to actually turn Bafana's area into a fortress. Steven Pienaar will be decisive to create offensive opportunities, as his creative role will be fundamental to exploit the advantages of team's electric forwards. PIenaar declared he was not at the 100%, but it was made clear during the last match that Parreira cannot do without Everton's offensive commander. He asked his team mates to play with the heart "No one can stop you if you play with your heart" were his exact words.

Player's confidence is sky high, and they know a victory this Wednesday will almost seal their pass to the next stage. Lucas Thwala's weak performance against Mexico was one of the reasons why the host was not able to retain the victory on the debut match. For that matter, and to provide assistance to the back line against Celeste's beasts, Tsepo Masilela will most likely perform within the starting eleven. Stopping Diego Forlan will be determinant to dominate the ball, but the task will be overly difficult. Another draw might turn the last match of the stage into a nightmare for both teams, so they can only go for victory. Having faced each other only once, this six-pointer will decide the future of both squads.

The last game of the first round of the World Cup and the closing fixture of the tournament’s Group H will take place at the Moses Mabhida Stadium on Wednesday, 16 June 2010, kick-off set for 3:00 PM. Spain and Switzerland are the last two teams to get their World Cup show on the road. Having watched the quality of matches that have been played before them, the Spaniards must be all but licking their chops in anticipation at the prospect of unleashing their attacking power in South Africa. David Villa is nicknamed ‘El Guaje’ and Fernando Torres has long been known as ‘El Nino’ (both mean ‘the kid’) but there is nothing innocent or green about the Spanish strikers on the international scene.

Vicente Del Bosque’s side can quite rightly complain that they enter the World Cup ranked only second in the world and as the second favourites to win the tournament behind Dunga’s Brazil. After all, the numbers tell that they have won 45 of their last 48 matches and are the reigning European champions. They have played more World Cup matches than any other nation without winning the trophy. They will probably never get a better chance to win the trophy than this one.
Spain striker Fernando Torres is likely to start off the bench as he is almost fit after a knee injury. Andres Iniesta is winning his fitness contest and might play instead of Fabregas.

Switzerland will be missing captain Alex Frei, who has an ankle injury, Eren Derdiyok will take his place in attack. West Ham midfielder Valon Behrami has also been ruled out.

The Swiss side are lead by legendary German manager Ottmar Hitzfeld and they will be quietly confident that his toughness and experience can guide them into second place in Group H. Remarkably, they were knocked out of the last World Cup in a penalty shootout at the second-round stage without conceding a single goal in the tournament. Given the quality of their adversary on Wednesday, they would be absolutely delighted if they could last a full 90 minutes without a goal scored against them.

Interestingly enough Spain and Switzerland have met 18 times in international football contests. Spain have won 15 of those fixtures, Switzerland none and there have been three draws. This match will also feature two of the just five coaches to have won the Champions League two times, Switzerland’s Ottmar Hitzfeld and Spain’s Vicente Del Bosque.

The New Zealand national football team, nicknamed the All
Whites, is the national association football team of New
Zealand and is governed by New Zealand Football (NZF). The team
plays in an all-white strip, hence its nickname (the name is also a
reference to the perhaps more famous New Zealand Rugby Union team, the All
Blacks).

The All Whites played in the 1982 FIFA World Cup and on 14 November 2009 qualified
for the 2010 FIFA World Cup. Because of the lack
of a high-quality domestic league, most top New Zealand footballers
play in the leagues of Europe, in the United States, or in the Australasian
A-League.

New Zealand formerly battled Australia
for top honours in the Oceania Football Confederation
(OFC). This
is no longer the case as Australia now plays in the Asian Football Confederation
(AFC), leaving New Zealand as the only seeded team in the OFC. New
Zealand has won the OFC Nations Cup four times - in 1973, 1998, 2002 and 2008.

Development

Despite its large player numbers, football in New Zealand struggles
to compete with other sports such as rugby
union, rugby league and cricket,
financially and for media exposure. The performance of the national
team is further hindered by a relatively young semi-professional
domestic league, the New Zealand Football
Championship having been established in 2004. New Zealand has one
professional team, Wellington Phoenix, which competes in
the Australian A-League.

Since the 1990s, United States college soccer has played a significant role in the
development of New Zealand players. This influence began when former Scotland international Bobby Clark returned to the U.S.
after his 1994–96 stint as All Whites head coach to take the head
coaching job at Stanford University (he now holds the
same position at Notre Dame). Clark began
recruiting in New Zealand, and current All Whites Ryan
Nelsen and Simon Elliott played for him at Stanford. The
trend that Clark started has continued to the present; more than two
dozen New Zealanders are now playing for NCAA Division I men's programs in the U.S.^[1]
A common next step in these players' career paths is a stint in Major League Soccer; ESPNsoccernet
journalist Brent Latham speculated in a March 2010 story that the All
Whites' 2010 FIFA World Cup squad could have
more MLS players than the U.S. squad.^[1]^[2]
However, Latham's speculation did not prove true, as only one MLS
player made the New Zealand squad for the World Cup.

The best known current players are Blackburn Rovers defender Nelsen,

Smeltz, Middlesbrough striker Chris
Killen and Plymouth Argyle striker Rory
Fallon. Several young players have shown promise in breaking

Herbert has named an experienced line-up for the All Whites 2010 FIFA
World Cup opener against Slovakia in Rustenburg on Tuesday night (NZT).

Oceania Player of the Year and New Zealand’s most
capped player in ‘A’ internationals Ivan Vicelich (66 caps) will partner
Simon Elliott – who is only three caps behind the Auckland City captain
– in the centre of midfield with the rest of the team having a settled
look about it after encouraging performances against Australia, Serbia
and Slovenia in recent weeks.

“We’ve always considered Ivan in midfield. He’s
played the length of his professional career in that role so he gets the
nod tomorrow.

“I wouldn’t say it was an easy decision to select
the team, let alone the central midfield positions but that’s what we’ve
gone with and I’m sure Ivan will be comfortable in there.”

Ryan Nelsen captains the side from the heart of
defence and will be flanked by relative newcomers Tommy Smith and
Winston Reid after strong showings in the 1-0 win over Serbia and a 1-3
defeat to Slovenia. Mark Paston starts in goal.

Leo Bertos and Tony Lochhead will carry on in the
wingback roles they have performed since the World Cup playoff against
Bahrain while Shane Smeltz, Rory Fallon and Chris Killen will continue
as Herbert’s preferred three-pronged attack.

All Whites captain Ryan Nelsen said a Slovakian side
that finished top of its qualifying group ahead of Slovenia and the
Czech Republic had “his utmost respect.”

“We know after playing Serbia and Slovenia, who we
think are similar, that Slovakia will be very strong, very disciplined
and very organised. We have a lot of respect for what they did through
their qualifying campaign and for their team all round. They are a
difficult side to play against, much like ourselves.”

Italy is among the top teams in international football and the second most successful national team in the history of the World Cup having won four titles (1934, 1938, 1982, 2006), just one fewer than Brazil. Netherlands national football team

The Dutch national football team is the national football team of the Netherlands and is controlled by the Royal Netherlands Football Association (KNVB). It won Euro '88 and reached two consecutive World Cup finals in 1974 and 1978, but lost both finals to their respective host nations, West Germany and Argentina. At the peak of its success in the 1970s, the team was famous for its mastery of Total Football and was nicknamed Clockwork Orange for its precision passing. In the Netherlands the team is colloquially referred to as Oranje. It is currently ranked fourth in the FIFA World Rankings and third in the World Football Elo Ratings.

History
Dutch squad for their first international match

The Netherlands played their first international match in Antwerp against Belgium on 30 April 1905. The players were selected by a five-member commission from the Dutch football association. After 90 minutes, the score was 1–1, but because the match was for a trophy (the "Coupe van den Abeele"), the game went into extra time, in which Eddy de Neve scored three times, making the score 1–4.[1]

The Netherlands made their first appearance at the World Cup final tournament in 1934, and after coming back in 1938, the Dutch national team entered the wilderness of world football.

They came out of this wilderness in the 1970s with the invention of Total Football (Dutch: Totaalvoetbal), pioneered by Ajax and led by playmaker Johan Cruyff and national team coach Rinus Michels. The Dutch made huge strides, qualifying for two World Cup finals in the decade.

In 1974, the Netherlands beat both Brazil and Argentina in the second group stage, reaching the final for the first time in their history. However, the team lost to West Germany in the final in Munich, despite having gone 1–0 up through Johan Neeskens' early penalty kick before any German had even touched the ball. The Dutch were trying to embarrass the Germans at home while they were only up 1–0. This would prove their undoing. Supported by the crowd, a converted penalty by Paul Breitner and the winner from Gerd Müller led to a victory for the Germans. Despite losing the final Clockwork Orange and Johan Cruyff had written a new page in football's history.

By comparison, Euro '76 was a disappointment. The Netherlands lost in the semi-finals to Czechoslovakia, as much because of fighting within the squad and the coach George Knobel, as well as the skill of the eventual winners.

In 1978, the Netherlands reached again the final of a World Cup, only to be beaten anew by the host, here Argentina. This side played without Johan Cruyff, Willem van Hanegem, and Jan van Beveren, who refused to participate in the World Cup. It still contained Johan Neeskens, Johnny Rep, Arie Haan, Ruud Krol and Rob Rensenbrink from the 1974 selection. The Netherlands were less impressive in the group stages. They qualified as runners-up, after a draw with Peru and a loss to Scotland. In the second group phase, however, the Netherlands topped a group including Italy and West Germany, setting up a final with Argentina. However, the Dutch finished as runners up for the second World Cup in a row as they ultimately lost 3–1 after two extra time goals from Argentina. Agonisingly for the Dutch, Rensenbrink hit the Argentinian post in the last minute of normal time, with the score 1–1.

Euro '80 was the last tournament that the generation of Total Football qualified for, but they did not advance past the group stage, despite the tournament format being expanded that year. Veterans such as Krol and Rensenbrink retired soon afterwards and the Netherlands missed the 1982 World Cup, Euro '84, and the 1986 World Cup in succession.

Rinus Michels returned to coach the team for the Euro '88 tournament. After losing the first group match against the Soviet Union (1–0), the Netherlands went on to qualify for the semi-final by defeating England 3–1 (with a hat-trick by the tournament's top scorer Marco van Basten), and Republic of Ireland (1–0). For many Dutch football supporters, the most important match in the tournament was the semi-final against West Germany, the host country, considered a revenge for the lost 1974 World Cup final (also in West Germany). Marco van Basten, who would later become national team coach, scored in the 89th minute of the game to sink the German side. The game is also remembered for its post-match shenanigans, including Ronald Koeman, who, in front of the German supporters, provocatively pretended to wipe his backside with the shirt of Olaf Thon as if it were toilet paper, an action Koeman later regretted.[2] The Netherlands won the final with a convincing victory over the USSR, a rematch on the round robin game, through a header by Ruud Gullit and a volley by van Basten. This was the national team's first major tournament win and it restored them to the forefront of international football after almost a decade in the wilderness for almost three years to come.

Despite high expectations as the team entered the 1990 World Cup, that tournament was not a success. Van Basten failed to score, as he was frequently marked by opposing defenders, while Gullit was ineffective having not fully recovered from injury. The Dutch managed to advance despite drawing all three group games, meeting their arch-rivals West Germany in the round of 16. The match is most remembered for the spitting-incident involving Frank Rijkaard and Rudi Völler as the Netherlands lost 2–1.

The team subsequently reached the semi-finals in the Euro '92, which was noted for the emergence of Dennis Bergkamp, but they were eliminated by eventual champions Denmark, with Van Basten's kick in the penalty shootout being saved by Peter Schmeichel. This was to be van Basten's last major tournament as he suffered a serious injury shortly after, eventually conceding defeat and retiring at the age of 30 in 1995.

In the 1994 World Cup, in the absence of the chronically injured van Basten and the striking Gullit, Dennis Bergkamp led the team with three goals and the Netherlands advanced to the quarter-finals, where they lost 3–2 to eventual champions Brazil.

At Euro '96, after drawing 0–0 with Scotland and beating Switzerland 2–0, they faced the hosts England in the pool A decider, with both teams on 4 points. After 62 minutes, with Scotland beating Switzerland 1–0, the Netherlands were 4–0 down and looked like finishing third behind Scotland on goal difference and going out of the tournament, but Patrick Kluivert converted a Dennis Bergkamp assist and scored in the 78th minute to see the Dutch finish second on goals scored. In the 1998 World Cup, Netherlands, whose team included Marc Overmars, Phillip Cocu, Edgar Davids, Frank de Boer, Ronald de Boer, and Patrick Kluivert, met Argentina in the quarter-final, a rematch of the 1978 final. Near the end of regular time, after an unsuccessful dive to draw a penalty, Argentinian Ariel Ortega head-butted Edwin van der Sar.[3] Ortega was sent off and the Netherlands won 2–1 after a Bergkamp goal in the 89th minute. Bergkamp's goal was famous because of its quality — he touched down a 60-yard (55 m) pass from Frank de Boer then reverse-flicked it inside Roberto Ayala and finally volleyed it past the Argentine goalkeeper. In the semi-final, the Netherlands took Brazil to a penalty shootout after a late Kluivert goal tied the match 1–1, but Brazil won the shootout 4–2 and advanced to the final. Netherlands lost the third place match 2–1 to upstart Croatia. Soon after the World Cup exit manager Guus Hiddink resigned after two tournaments in charge and was replaced by legendary ex-midfielder Frank Rijkaard.

Netherlands co-hosted Euro 2000 with Belgium and were one of the favourites coming into the tournament. Getting all three wins in the group stage, including a win over reigning World Cup champions France, they then crushed Yugoslavia 6–1 in the quarter-finals, with Kluivert getting a hat-trick. In the semi-finals, their opponents, Italy, went down to ten men in the first half and the Netherlands were awarded two penalty kicks but failed to convert either chance. Italian goalkeeper Francesco Toldo made two saves in the shootout (in addition to his penalty saves in regulation time) to eliminate the Netherlands. Having failed to score during the tournament, Dennis Bergkamp retired from the national team after Euro 2000. Coach Frank Rijkaard was widely criticized by the press after the defeat to the Italians as the Dutch had squandered several chances to kill the game. Rijkaard resigned, with Louis van Gaal taking over. Van Gaal is credited with initially bringing through the spine of this Dutch side whilst manager of Ajax durting the mid ninieties, including Edwin van der Sar, Edgar Davids, Michael Reiziger, Clarence Seedorf, Marc Overmars, Patrick Kluivert and the de Boer twins.
Netherlands at the 2006 World Cup

Surprisingly the Netherlands failed to qualify for the 2002 World Cup, with crucial losses to Portugal and the Republic of Ireland, the latter of which eliminated them from the Finals tournament. Van Gaal resigned at the conclusion of the Netherlands' unsuccessful campaign.

Dick Advocaat returned to coach the Netherlands for a second time and led the team to the semifinals of Euro 2004 but lost to Portugal and, after receiving criticism for his tactics and player changes, stepped down. This was to be the end for the many of the team's World Cup veterans (mostly made up of the Ajax generation of 1995.) Frank and Ronald de Boer, Edgar Davids, Clarence Seedorf, Marc Overmars, Jaap Stam, and Patrick Kluivert had either retired or were not selected for the upcoming World Cup by new coach Marco van Basten.

The Netherlands qualified for the 2006 World Cup in Germany and finished second in Group C after beating Serbia & Montenegro (1–0) and the Côte d'Ivoire (2–1) and drawing Argentina (0–0). Both Argentina and the Netherlands finished the group stage with seven points, but the Argentinians had a superior goal difference and finished first as a result. The Dutch were eliminated in the second round after losing 1–0 to Portugal, in a match that produced 16 yellow cards (which matched the World Cup record for most cautions in one game set in 2002) and set a new World Cup record of four red cards (two for either side) and was nicknamed "the Battle of Nuremberg" by the press[4]. Despite criticism surrounding his selection policy and the lack of attacking football from his team, Marco van Basten was offered a two-year extension to his contract by the Dutch FA, which would allow him to serve as national coach during Euro 2008 and the 2010 World Cup. The move was widely regarded as a vote of confidence in van Basten and his assistants by the KNVB officials.[5]
Netherlands – France at Euro 2008

The Netherlands began their Euro 2008 campaign with a win in Luxembourg on 2 September 2006. On 8 September 2007, the Oranje beat Bulgaria at the Amsterdam ArenA on goals by Wesley Sneijder and Ruud van Nistelrooy. On 12 September 2007, the Netherlands won a hard fought victory against Albania, with van Nistelrooy scoring the winning goal in stoppage time. This win took the Dutch squad into second place in Group G, on par with Romania for points, but behind on goal differential. The Oranje were beaten 1–0 in Romania on 13 October 2007, but four days later, the Netherlands' 2–0 victory over Slovenia, while rivals Bulgaria could only draw in Albania, left the Dutch needing one win from their last two games, at home to Luxembourg and away to Belarus, to qualify for Euro 2008.

The Netherlands played their first game in 2008 against Croatia in Split. The team, without Ruud van Nistelrooy, Robin van Persie, Clarence Seedorf, Orlando Engelaar, and Arjen Robben, won the match 3–0. The first goal was scored by John Heitinga on a header, while Klaas-Jan Huntelaar scored the second goal on an assist from Tim de Cler. The final goal came from Celtic striker Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink. The team used a new formation under Marco van Basten, scrapping the previously used 4–3–3 formation for a 4–2–3–1.

The Dutch team was a participant in the "Group of Death", together with France, Italy, and Romania. They began Euro 2008 with a 3–0 win over World Cup Champion Italy in Berne on 9 June 2008. This was the Netherlands' first victory over Italy since 1978. In their second group match against France on 13 June 2008, the Netherlands won convincingly with a 4–1 score. The Dutch closed out an incredible group stage campaign with a 2–0 win over Romania. However, they lost in the quarter-final to former coach Guus Hiddink's Russia by 3–1, despite a late 86th minute equalizer by Ruud van Nistelrooy.

The Dutch team went on to secure a 100 percent record in their World Cup 2010 qualification campaign, winning all eight games and becoming the first European team to qualify for the World Cup. The World Cup Draw in Cape Town on the 4 December 2009 saw the Dutch being placed alongside Denmark, Cameroon and Japan in Group E.

The teams also share a lengthy list of injury concerns, with Danish Dynamite boss Morten Olsen, himself has laid low by flu for several days, having to do without key striker Nicklas Bendtner (groin strain) and facing doubts over keeper Thomas Sorensen (elbow) and defenders Simon Kjaer (knee) and Patrick Mtiliga (thigh). His Dutch opposite number Bert van Marwijk will be unable to call on Bayern winger Arjen Robben, who has a hamstring injury, although he does have a top-class replacement available in Real Madrid midfielder Rafael van der Vaart.

On top of his walking wounded, Danish coach Olsen will also be concerned about 1-0 warm-up defeats by Australia and host nation South Africa on June 1 and June 4 respectively, though the Danes did sink Senegal 2-0 on May 27. The Dutch, for their part, have not been beaten since a September 2008 friendly reverse against the Socceroos, though should hold few surprises for their opponents. Indeed, five Denmark players ply their trade in the Netherlands’ Eredivisie and another four share a dressing room with Dutch players at their Premier League clubs.

Daniel Agger v Robin van Persie

The two players experienced mixed fortunes in English football this campaign, with Daniel Agger a solid presence for Liverpool despite the Reds ending a disappointing season down in seventh spot. Meanwhile, Van Persie’s lengthy injury absence was undoubtedly a key factor in Arsenal’s inability to finish higher than third.

It was the Gunners who won the clubs’ head-to-head meetings in 2009/10, 2-1 at Anfield and 1-0 at the Emirates Stadium, though Van Persie missed both of those games. More relevant, therefore, is the fact that the quicksilver Dutch striker scored the last time the two players faced off, in a 1-1 draw in December 2008.
